Inlays and onlays

Inlays are a microprosthesis of a tooth. They are used to restore the shape or colour of a tooth.

Unlike crowns, the inlays and onlays do not cover the entire tooth, but only a part of it. Often they are used to restore the masticatory surface of distant teeth, instead of fillings.

Inlays and onlays types

According to the fabrication material, the following types of inlays can be distinguished::

Ceramic inlays and onlays

There are zirconia and ceramic inlays and onlays. Zirconia inlays and onlays look very aesthetically pleasing. Such inlays and onlays are reliable and durable.

Advantages of inlays and onlays in comparison with fillings

  • Excellent aesthetic properties.
Ceramic inlays and onlays are not visible at all on the tooth.
  • Durability.
Ceramic inlays and onlays retain their ideal appearance for a very long time, while the fillings may fade after 2-4 years; the service life of the inlays and onlays with proper hygiene is more than 10 years.
  • High precision of the fabrication of the inlays and onlays.
Modern technologies allow us to make the inlays and onlays as accurately as possible for the tooth defect so that the gap between the inlay and the tissues is minimal. In fillings, such indicators are much worse; repeated caries often occurs.
